The hottest sip at the coffee bar is cold, iced coffee
At Yordprom Coffee Co., they call it liquid crack. At Tandem Coffee Roasters, regulars go ga-ga over it. And customers at Speckled Ax sip it like a cocktail, slowly with intent. It’s iced coffee and especially during the recent heat wave, it’s getting some attention. As Portland’s coffee scene widens, local baristas are crafting iced coffee with a mixologist’s precision. “The objective is to make it taste like hot coffee,” said Matt […]

Critic’s Notebook Weekly Dish: ’Tis the season for cold brew (coffee, that is)
Years ago, I was passing through the Dallas airport and before catching my connecting flight, I ambled over to the Starbucks counter for a coffee. “A latte venti,” I said, while eyeing the cinnamon buns. When I looked up over the counter, the saleswoman said, “You really want a hot coffee?” Looking around me, I realized everyone was drinking iced coffee. When I left Montreal, it had been close to zero degrees, but here in Dallas, it was a sweltering 30 C outside the air-conditioned terminal  […]

Iced coffee sets Dallas caffeine scene abuzz
The South has always been known as the land of iced tea, but there’s a new cold drink in town: iced coffee. Once found primarily in the Northeast, iced coffee has become the cold drink of summer 2013 in Dallas-Fort Worth, thanks to a wave of coffeehouses offering it, many via flashy state-of-the-art technology. Weekend Coffee uses a drip that looks like it came from a science lab. Ascension in the Design District sells it to-go in beer-like “growlers.” Oddfellows in Bishop Arts and Brewed in Fort Worth pull their iced coffee from a keg, just like beer. This new wave of iced coffee is not the milksh  […]

Be a B+ Coffee Snob
Mocking people who care about coffee is a proud American tradition dating back approximately to the birth of Starbucks. The same jokes about coffee-dandyism that filled up many a half-hour of the ’90s-era sitcom Frasier still work for The New Girl. (And Portlandia. And Funny or Die.) The attitude has become so commonplace that it infects journalism about contemporary coffee appreciation. Glance at the New York Times’ recent item on the latest high-market brew outfit to open a glitzy showcase space in Manhattan  […]

Caffeine Doesn’t Increase Activity Level
People trying to lose weight are often advised not only to exercise regularly and eat carefully, but to increase their activity levels throughout the day. Frequent, small bursts of low-level activity, such as walking to the store, cleaning the house, or doing yard work, can add up to burning hundreds of additional calories per day. It might seem that coffee and other substances containing caffeine could help you meet this goal, given caffeine’s reputation for spurring activity. Alas, that’s not the case, according to new research out of Portugal  […]

How Do You Drink Coffee In Space? With A Zero-Gravity Coffee Cup, Of Course
Scientists are conducting experiments aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to better understand how coffee behaves in microgravity. On Earth, liquid coffee depends on gravity for its brewing process. Hot water drips onto fresh grinds, which strips the oil from the beans to create the cup of joe you rely on for that early-morning pick-me-up. Without gravity, however, brewing a cup of  […]
